Photographer's Note

Building of the Semperoper in Dresden.
The Semperoper is the Saxon State Opera and the concert hall in the Old Town of Dresden. The opera house was originally built by the architect Gottfried Semper in 1841. In 1869 a fire devasted the first building and Gottfried Semper rebuilt the opera house in in 1878. In 1945, during the last months of World War II, the building was largely destroyed and exactly 40 years later, in 1985, it was reconstructed.

In front of the Opera House there is an equestrian statue of the Saxon King Johann.

Most of the buildings in Dresden are built of Elbe sandstone, this beautiful light stone is mined in the Elbe river valley near Dresden, but over time the stone becomes darker and constantly around the buildings are visible scaffoldings for workers who clean walls.
