Photographer's Note

Islam in China has existed through 1,400 years of continuous interaction with Chinese society.

These days China is home to more than 20 million muslims. They belong to ten of the country's officially recognized minority peoples.

The best known of these are the Uyghurs, who live in the far west of the country, and the Hui. The designated homeland of the Hui people is Ningxia province, but they live a bit all over the country.

This picture shows a man in front of a beautiful door of the Langmusi mosque.

Langmusi is a largely Tibetan town built around an ancient Tibetan monastery, but it also houses sizeable communities of Hui and Han people.
