Photographer’s Note
To get an idea of the scale here, take at the white dots along the bank of the loch. These are houses and other buildings along the road.
Some places stay with us and lure us back with the memories and mental images we keep forever in our mind's eye. Scotland can very easily do this, probably because we forget the weather and the midgies.
My grandfather drove off to Scotland on a motorcycle and settled down in Scotland. He was lured in by the landscape and once he fell in love with the mountains, there was no turning back. My mother recalls the long Sunday drives of her childhood to every beautiful edge of Scotland. Too bad she got car sick.
My grandfather was also an excellent painter and pianist. I have seen his excellent water colours which he kept behind closed doors. No doubt they were his way of enjoying the land while at home and away from the mountiains, just as I enjoy these photographs taken last summer.

Lovely shot! The composition is classically thirds, but the lighting is where this one really shines - the play of the afternoon light on the hillside is magnificent. The only part that bothers me slightly is the lack of a foreground focal point to add a finishing touch to the image... Anyway very nicely captured :-D

Very nice compostion Dan, I really like the light here. The contrast between the green of the mountains and the dark sky is well renderred.
Well done.

That's exactly how imagine Scotland, Dan. The light creates wonderful tones of green. Beautiful (though it is still difficult to imagine the right scale).

Dan, this is lovely... almost as lovely as the same view with the man considering his insignificance that you've posted. Excellent note and story. Good holidays to you and yours, and wonderful memories of your grandfather - much like the lights and darks and many natural colors and textures of this photo. :o)

Dan, your landscapes and architectural pictures are very sound. Of course, this is a favorite for alot of reasons, not the least, the perfect sharpness and lighting. Regards for the NY.

The colours and atmosphere in this shot are great - the threatening sky, but at the same time the sun is there somewhere!
Well captured Dan

Stunning image! I hope you have already submitted this and others of your photos to the BBC photo competition Picture of Britain as this shot in particular is phenomenal! With your history of your family enjoying painting etc... you would probably also enjoy the series with David Dimbleby on Sunday nights if you have not already seen it!
Wonderful composition, lighting and detail! I love the note about the scale of the image, it really puts it all in perspective! Well done!

Perfect. This is true Scotland. Maybe in general a bit too dark, but it's part of the drama.

Wow, what awesome colours Dan, the florescent glow of the hills really make this special. Great DOF and exposure. I like the cropping also...definitely one to be proud of.
