What are you Looking At?, a photo from Cusco, South

Photographer's Note

Maybe we've all done this at some point...

When you see a large group of photographers shooting the same subject, instead of joining in why not take a step back and photograph the shooters!

This idea occurred to me when we were on a bit of a road trip in Peru. I have to thank Malgo for helping me with the location. Its in the Urubamba Park, or Sacred Valley. I've added it in the Map View.

This is my kind of picture. I'm a dedicated photographer-snatcher. The workshops are definitely more beautiful, but they're also more conventional pretty postcards. This one is a lot more fun. It makes us all ask what on earth could be so interesting down there. I only wish some of them had had the good taste to wear some brighter clothes :-).

like the staging of tosca (puccini's tosca, lol)

she throws herself down to tiber from the top of castel sant'angelo in rome, and soldiers rush after her and look down while the lady is still singing that high "falling down" note :)))

it is always fun to "hunt the hunters". good "luminocity" at counterlighting conditions. in fact, you have many counterlight photos from your south american trip. i guess you'll enjoy a lot the "direct" december light in cuba, coming back with many bright photos.

Hi Craig,

Yes, I must apologise for not having been very active here on TE for a wee while - first our little TE meeting in the Scottish Borders and then a trip to south Wales to visit my youngest daughter and husband and meet my new grandson!

This is a spectacular shot and I bet it's a far better one than any of those photographers managed to capture - a great "people watching" image!

Your two workshop pictures are delightful too - very impressive indeed looking down into that Sacred Valley far below. All pictures have amazing light and amazing skies, no doubt helped by your super-wide lens and your skilful processing but the lanscape is very dramatic indeed too. Gorgeous light and colours and your usual exquisite details and sharpness, much better seen in the main image when viewed at bigger size on "beta" TE.

P.S. I've just noticed a funny thing. If you click on Map:view and your map comes up, the Google map no longer seems to have the multicoloured "Google" logo at bottom left - that used to be good because you could click on it and open up a much bigger map.

I've had a look at this amazing place on Google Earth too - the valley looks amazing though the little yellow Google man hasn't yet driven his little camera car around these parts. There are, however, lots of photographs of this place to see on Google Earth. Is that little town down in the valley called Maras?

A critical study on postures while taking a photograph !! The lady with black trousers on the left looks like she would fall over.... And the group of three on the right seem to have a common vertigo problem and so are a safe distance away from the edge.
Very Interesting & humorous photograph, Craig. But 'humour' apart, you have captured brilliant skies. The billowy white clouds and the depth of the patch of blue is intense. The perspective and distances (from your position to the hills on the other side) have come off excellently. There are 12 people looking over the cliff and are well spread apart. Well captured !!
Having seen the two photographs in your ws, it is no wonder that people are almost falling over - capturing the scene....

Une très bonne idée. Surtout qu'ils semblent regarder avec une certaine crainte vers en bas. On sent qu'ils veulent voir sans trop s'approcher du précipice. Encore une fois, cette lentille donne de très beaux résultats.

Hi Craig,
Photographing a photographer is always funny. I think there is a theme on TE titled like that. Of course if there is a whole group of them it is even funnier and more interesting. Here the composition indeed raises our interest and I bet everyone had a look into the workshop photo. Distorted perspective enhances the feeling that the people bend over to see the view. Everything well topped up with the great sky!

Nice humorous shot of the people taking pictures across the valley. Love the shapes some of them get themselves into to try and get the best angle. I suppose we all do it but it looks funny. Great background with the clouds rising over the mountains.

An unusual shot of the tourists snapping away and I am intrigued so will open the workshops upon completion of my critique. I like the exaggerated perspective and the lens barrel distortion from the wide angled lens. Good sharpness and composition. Tfs!
