Photographer's Note
Tapir of Guyana : Tapir is famous nickname of locally produced passenger car for local transport. A tapir is a small box shaped mini bus which should carry 7 passengers. Fares for both forms of transport are fixed by the Government and based on a fare stage system. There are only a few taxis in the Corriverton area and very few people own private cars. Driving on the roads is dangerous, especially at night. Cows, horses, donkeys, pigs and goats are allowed to wander freely on the highway and pose a continual danger to traffic. In addition many of the mini-bus and tapir drivers race for fares.
At night people often ride cycles without lights and many other forms of transport have inadequate lighting.
1960's British cars and trucks are common. The Bedford truck is the most popular form of heavy transport.
Corriverton : Corriverton is the most easterly town in Guyana. Located at the wide mouth of the Corentyne River, opposite Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname. It is a modern adminijstrative construction, formed from two older towns, Springlands and Skeldon, and several villages which were named, or rather numbered (e.g. '78'), after their sugar plantations, owned by Bookers.
Corriverton had a population of 11,574, as of the 2002 Census.
A ferry links Corriverton with Nieuw Nickerie.
Corriverton has a mixed populace of Hindus, Christians and Muslims living together in haromoniously. It is the site of many mosques, temples and Churches, and has an excellent educational system.

Many cheers you to all,

What an ugly looking car! Anyway, if it carries on well its duties it is a good thing. What is the building in the background? A mosque?
You have here a very nice picture with a good POV and all very sharp. I also like the note and the comment about copyrights. Well done.

Merhaba my friend Ertugrul,
Good scene of the daily life in this city, and good information about this peculiar way of transport, a nice and practical vehicle.
I like the simple and calm environment of this street, caught in a setting with a good perspective.
Good work, it allows us to know aspects and places of your country, in the spirit of TE.
Friendly regards,
Josep

Merhaba Ertugrul,
At first sight it has a style unusual in your gallery, because it reminds one of those quick street snapshots, but thinking better most of your posts here present daily life scenes. I guess the difference is that usually you present such neat and clean compos and treat the colours (namely of the skies) so well that one 'forgets' that they are daily life photos, as they amaze like only the 'great landscape photos' do.
However, I like it very much. The slight clutter (poles, cables, cars, road signs, etc.) of the compo is well tamed and it's a characteristic of the view you want to show and you achieve that goal very effectively.
The Tapir is so ugly and strange that it becomes cute and very funny.
TFS, Regards, José.

Hey Ertugrul,
Yeah, more of Guyana, I think it`s not represented enough here on TE. You could even dare to venture further into the jungles and so on. :)
Anyway, good to see you`ve crossed the border, and shot this fine photo. Even a everyday situation over there is something special over here, for me at least.
Best regards

Hi Ertugrul,
Lovely capture of this curious looking taxi. Nice depth with clear crisp colors to this urban landscape. There are many people living in my hometown (Schenectady NY) from Guyana and they are very welcomed addition to our community.

Hello Ertugrul,
I see quite a big mosque behind & Salman's store ... must be a Muslim section of town. Great atmosphere of small town & congested road. Great to know the religious harmony & tolerance there ... I would say the same thing about my country. The tapir is well placed as your main subject. I could even the driver quite clearly. Regards. Latiff.

Hello Ertugrul bey!
With this photo you prove your excellent ability to tell stories of people's life - both in picture and words. With just a few details and words you manage to convey so many interesting things about life - starting from transportation and finishing with religion toleration.
Friendly greetings,

hi EK,
interesting notes about this mode of transport. in the philippines, we have the jeepneys- always full especially in the suburbs, as there are no government restrictions..in the city, it's the opposite- students are the most common riders.
tapir, on the other hand is a name given to a hog-like exotic animal i often see in zoos. i like the way you presented it to include the miranets of the background mosque and the cyclists added the scale.
