Photographer's Note

we encountered a group of kichwa women: mother, aunt (the aunt is barely visible in her traditional dress and stance in the background) and a little girl, while hiking around the famous quilotoa lagoon. the mother encouraged her girl to ask me for a "christmas present" (demande-lo un regalo de navidad)*. i got a photo in exchange.

* as we have learned, it is an ecuadorian tradition that between christmas and new year local ameri-indian people ask for money from anybody non-indigenous looking they encounter. at times, asking for presents escalates to such extremes as jumping in front of cars runing at full speed on the pan-american highway. but that's a different story.
