Photographer's Note

I realise that I should be claiming copyright for "fluffy" - used here by Kristaps and here by Peter, but instead of complaining I'll just post my version of "fluffy" - a cross-cut of páramo.

páramo is a neotropical ecosystem that located in the high elevations, between the upper forest line (about 3100 m altitude) and the permanent snow line (about 5000 m). the ecosystem consists of valleys formed by glaciers and plains with a large variety of lakes, peat bogs and wet grasslands, and hosts about 5000 different plant species, and about 60% of these species are endemic (unique to the place), adapted to the specific physio-chemical and climatic conditions, such as the low atmospheric pressure, intense ultra-violet radiation, and the drying effects of wind.

we had just started the 3-hour walk around the lagoon Limpiopungo (photo by Kristaps) in Cotopaxi National Park, when I noticed this eroding hillside showing the moss and the roots of the grass.

ISO 100 at 18mm focal length, spot metering and auto white balance.
