Photographer's Note

I was told many who came here wishing to see Fitz Roy had gone home disappointed. And it could as well be true in my case. I got up early this morning and it had been clouds as you can see here and in my previous post. Just as I was giving up and about to go back for breakfast, the clouds started to clear and little bit and out of the cloudy sky, Fitz Roy began to appear. Breakfast can wait, Fitz Roy Can’t. I was told to always have my camera ready when walking around Patagonia. The Mountain peaks here can appear and disappear in seconds. The clouds are always moving in and hanging around the peaks of the mountains. Of the 3 days we were in this area, we only saw it this morning in and out of the clouds for about an hour or so, by the time we finish breakfast it was gone. We hiked up to a lookout point to see it later that that day. It remained hidden in the clouds for the rest of my stay.

Some information about Fitz Roy
Cerro Fitz Roy or Monte Fitz Roy, is a mountain located near the El Chaltén village, in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It is also sometimes called Cerro Chaltén, after the Tehuelche (Aonikenk) word meaning "smoking mountain," due to a cloud that usually forms around the mountain's peak. However it was only one of a number of peaks the Tehuelche called Chaltén.

Since the native inhabitants also called other mountains Chaltén, he named it Fitz Roy, in honour of Robert FitzRoy, who as captain of the Beagle had travelled up the Santa Cruz River in 1834 and charted large parts of the Patagonian coast.
