Photographer’s Note
After many years of dumping raw (or partially treated sewage) into Boston Harbor, the city finally completed a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility on Deer Island in 2002. Two deep rock tunnels under the harbor deliver raw sewage to the island for treatment. The egg-shaped structures on the right side of the picture are anaerobic digesters in which the solids that are removed from the wastewater are converted into biosolids for beneficial reuse as fertilizer.
