Photographer's Note

A detail photo of the lovely Victorian house on the property. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden consists of 127 acres of grounds at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, which provide a stunning backdrop. It's technically in Arcadia, located just across the street from the equally famous Santa Anita Park, a racetrack. It was built on land formerly comprising the Rancho Santa Anita, one of the Mexican land grants in the area. The land cycled through multiple owners, but the botanical garden was established in 1875, when Elias Jackson Baldwin purchased the land and built some buildings there. The arboretum was founded in 1947 when both the state and the county of Los Angeles purchased 111 acres to create it; the first greenhouse appeared in 1949, and 1000 trees had been planted by 1951. The park opened to the public in 1956. Additional areas were planted over the years, including tropical greenhouses, prehistoric and jungle gardens, and sections with flora from Africa and Australia. There are more than 200 peafowl on the grounds also, the descendants of the original stock imported from India. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit: some of the specimens you won't see anywhere else in the state. As with many other sites in SoCal, this one has seen its fair share of cinema productions. There is an incredible Victorian house on the property, as well as a lake, which is currently dry. It's perhaps most famous for the opening credits of the TV show Fantasy Island. Most recently, Katy Perry's music video for "Roar" was filmed here, in 2013.
