Photographer's Note

In the Grand Canyon, mules are still used as a primary method of transport for loads making their way from the rim to Phantom Ranch on the banks of the Colorado River. These mules seemed to be carrying supplies rather than backpacker's packs (as is often seen).

This photo was taken just up from Skeleton Point on the South Kaibab trail. It was only one of two mule trains I saw on that trail: most take the easier Bright Angel trail up further west.

I knew the train was coming so I stayed about 15 minutes at this spot, where I got many great photos while waiting for the mules.

No post-processing.
