Actual Resurrection

As we approach Easter and buy chocolate bunnies and paint eggs (both pagan symbols of Spring and fertility), it’s an appropriate time to post an image devoid of paganism, myth and faith and look at something that was actually brought back from oblivion.
The Oga lotus is a lotus flower that has a fascinating history. Lotus flowers evolved around the time of the dinosaurs around 130 million years ago. In 1951 Dr Ichiro Oga, a Japanese palaeobotanist, discovered three seeds of a lotus that had disappeared 2000 years ago. He sent two seeds to the University of Chicago and kept one for himself which he germinated and which flowered on the 17th of July 1952. In 2005 a seed was obtained by the Lotus Flower Garden in Yarra Junction, Melbourne and it germinated in 2012 and from that seed we now have a pond filled with beautiful blooms. Now that was a resurrection!
