Photographer's Note

Monti is the name of one of the twelve "Rioni" of Rome, the name literally means mountains in Italian.In ancient times the rione was densely populated: in Monti there were the Forum Romanum and the so called Suburra (meaning suburbs in Latin): this was the place poor people lived, full of disreputable locals and brothels. It's important to remember that, as effect of the increase of urbanization, at the end of the nineteenth century after Rome had become the capital of a united Italy, the Fascist regime changed completely the appearance of the rione. In particular, between 1924 and 1936 a big part of the rione, made of small streets and popular houses, was destroyed to built via dei Fori Imperiali and the archaeological buildings of the forum Romanum were dug out from under the ground.

=============================================
