City of Roses

I am nearing the end of my Portland series (this is photo #14 already), but I cannot leave the city without showing a photo with roses, because apart from the City of Bridges, another, and the official, nickname for Portland is the City of Roses, which the city has had for over a century. The warm, dry summer weather and the cool, rainy winters of Portland are the ideal climate for growing roses.

Today’s three photos were all taken in Washington Park, a large urban park. The two photos of the rose bushes were taken in the International Rose Test Garden, which is part of the park and which is the oldest rose test garden in the United States. It contains more than 10,000 rose bushes of some 650 varieties. It opened in 1917.
