Front wing length mm. 17-24

Description: butterflies with ocher-orange wings with blackish patterns; the hind wings have large dark submarginal spots. The caterpillar is covered with branched spines.
psap with submarginal black spots of lunular shape separated from each other. It can easily be confused with Melitaea fascelis, which has psap with submarginal black spots linked together in a continuous pattern. Characterized by a remarkable sexual dimorphism and by a great variability of designs and colors, especially in the female.

Male: orange color with more or less extended black macular design. Hind wings with large submarginal black spots of lunular shape, detached from each other. Black basal veil.

Female: similar to the male but generally larger and with paler front wings and sometimes veiled in black.

Reverse: orange fore-wings with yellowish apex and reduced black macular design. Hindquarters with basal spaces, wide postdiscal band and marginal yellowish band interspersed with two more or less continuous orange bands.

Distribution: widespread in southern Europe, North Africa and central Asia throughout Italy, excluding Sardinia.

Habitat: meadows from the basal plane to the mountain and cacuminal level, up to about 2100 meters s.l.m.

Annual generations: two with flicker in May-June and August-September.

Feeding plants: Linaria vulgaris, Stachys recta, Globularia punctata, Plantago lanceolata.
