Photographer's Note

The altar is dedicated to the Roman Goddess of Peace (Pax - Greek Goddess of Peace - Eirene), and was commissioned by the Roman Senate in recognition of the leadership of Augustus of campaigns in Spain and Gaul over three years, July 4, 13 BCE. The original, of marble, was installed in 9 BCE on the Campus Martius, Rome, but now is situated near the mausoleum of Augustus. This panel constitutes but a portion of the north face of the altar, focussing on a few of the senators accompanied by pages.
