Photographer's Note

A short distance into the Alumni Walk, toward the southern end of the Main Quad, there is this very well- executed sculpture. It is labelled "Sweetgrass Teachings". I have no information as to the artist or date of execution.

For a number of years in my career, I taught at various tertiary-level institutions in Canada and abroad. I realized early on that teaching involved not only ideas, information (data), concepts, theories, but most importantly - values and attitudes. On numerous occasions I had to deal with cheating, plagiarism, and theft by students - even from my own residence. This monument reminds everyone of some of the values shared among Canada's First Nations that should guide and shape the education of everyone, inside and outside of institutions. Teaching is what teachers do. Learning is what we all must do! Tomorrow, I will upload a different and closer view.
