Photographer's Note
Another one from Sulukule, the gypsy quarter of Istanbul famous for its entertainers. This nervous youngster has started out on his musical career and will have to sweat out the rebukes of his elder colleagues for many years.
I know there's to much space above the heads but if I had pointed the lens downwards, the heads of the gents on the sides would have become egg-shaped and the window frame would have weirded out.

Hello Hakki
Probably one of the best Sulukule pictures I have seen so far. You mention a flash but curiously I don't see any trace of it. I like the blue and the red, bur particularly the serious faces of the players.
Keep well this picture it is a very valuable one.

A wonderful ethnologic picture. I am just amazed by the composition. I like so much the 3 guys, but the background is also wonderful. I would have never imagine such a scenery in Istanbul. A masterpiece. Geraldine

Hello Hakki,
I don't think there's too much space above the heads, really. With the window, the carpet, that lovely blue colour and that enormous hole in the wall there is plenty to keep us busy in that space.
What I like most is the pose of young player, who is very conscious of your presence. He looks like he is copying a picture of a star on a record sleeve. Great contrast with the older guys who've probably seen it all.

I dont know what you know about the spaces over heads etc but this is definitely a great photo :)
this is a perfect triangle of portraits, kid looking directly, very beautiful with that half suspicious (and/or shy) smile on his face, other tips of the triangle with old wrinkled faces trying to avoid looking into your lens...
very beautiful subtle colors (though I am pretty sure now that you are color blind :)
can I get a blow up :)

Hi Hakki, this is a very evocative photo with good atmosphere. The strange, rich wall colours and their solemn expressions contribute an unmistakable gypsy "feel" to the image. I once walked through Sulukule and remember the place well. Great shot.

Ryno
