Photographer's Note

I am still in Turkey. But crossing the mountains that run parallel to the Black Sea coast I almost thought myself suddenly moved to Switzerland.

Here is a larger version.

On my journey in the summer of 1971 I spent the first weeks mainly in the southern and eastern parts of the country, then turned north to the Black Sea.

This photo was taken somewhere in the province of Gümüşhane, where everything suddenly looked totally different from the arid areas I had passed through. The mountains looked different, the vegetation was different, and even more significantly the buildings in the villages looked more like what I would have expected to find in the European Alps.

I was almost surprised to see that the signs were still written in Turkish.

I scanned this from an Agfacolor CT18 slide.
