Photographer's Note

I remain in Antalya on the Turkish Mediterranean coast with a photo taken the same day as the last one. I had planned to use this as a WS but decided to upgrade it to a main upload. I didn't want to give you an impression that I only took postcard photos when I was young.

Here is a larger version.

This is from when I explored the narrow lanes of the old part of the city. These buildings were obviously not in a good shape, but they were certainly not abandoned. There were usually people sitting behind these bay windows, keeping an eye on what was going on in the street below. I noted in the diary after my first day in the city that they seemed to find me very interesting. Everywhere I went I had eyes staring at me.

The next day I wrote that the most efficient way to scare ladies away, "if for any reason I should ever want to do that", was to take out the camera, pretend to adjust the settings, and in a matter of seconds they would all be gone.

That is why every window is empty. But capturing a little boy in red and a man further away made me happy then and still pleases me.

The Google street view indicates that not surprisingly a lot of restoration work has been done in this area since 1971. Basically it doesn't look very different, just nicer and wealthier.

I have scanned this from an Agfacolor CT18 slide.
