Photographer's Note

Inside the Basilica Cistern. This one is a photo that I could not take in my previous trip to Istanbul, because of the low efficiency to high ISO values of the camera that I was using in that moment. But now I have done it, because my current camera allows me to work at high ISO values, in this case 3200. And it has made me very happy, because it was a pending challenge for me.
Tripods are prohibited here.

The Basilica Cistern is one of the multiple cisterns that exists in Istanbul. The cisterns are warehouses that were constructed in order that the city had water reservations in case of being on attack. Another name (more attractive enough) with that the cistern is known is a “Plunged Palace".
The Cistern Basilica was constructed in time of Justiniano I (527-565) to supply to the Byzantine Palace. The emplacement (to the one that owes its name) was the underground of a basilica of which today nothing stays.
In order to fill the cistern one was resorting to Valente's and Adriano's aqueducts (still existing). These aqueducts were receiving the water of the Forests of Belgrade, to approximately 20 kilometers of Constantinople.
Yerebatan's cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici, in Turk) takes a few dimensions of 140 as 70 meters and it is calculated that it could store approximately 100.000 m3 of water.
The Basilica Cistern has 336 columns of 9 meters of height. The styles of the columns are very varied, since they were re-used of former structures and monuments.
The tourist walk is done by a few gangplanks over the water. These gangplanks were placed at the end of the 20th century, since previously the walk was done by boat. Between 336 columns of the basilica there are two that take a Medusa head as a base, the mythological being who was turning into stone the one who was looking at her. There are diverse theories about the signification of these big heads inside the cistern, though the most accepted theory is that they put it as a columns base.

Dentro de la Cisterna Basílica. Ésta es una foto que no pude tomar en mi anterior viaje a Estambul, por causa de la baja eficacia a valores altos de ISO de la cámara que usaba en aquel momento.
Pero ahora he podido hacerlo, porque mi cámara actual me permite trabajar a altos valores ISO, en este caso a 3200. Y eso me ha hecho muy feliz, porque era un desafío pendiente para mí.
Los trípodes están prohibidos aquí.

La Cisterna Basílica es una de las múltiples cisternas que hay en Estambul. Las cisternas son depósitos que se construyeron para que la ciudad tuviera reservas de agua en caso de ser atacada. Otro nombre (bastante más atractivo) con el que se conoce la cisterna es "Palacio Sumergido".
La Cisterna Basílica fue construida en tiempos de Justiniano I (527-565) para abastecer al Palacio Bizantino. El emplazamiento (al que debe su nombre) fue el subterráneo de una basílica de la que hoy no queda nada.
Para llenar la cisterna se recurría a los acueductos de Valente (aún existente) y de Adriano. Estos acueductos recibían el agua de los Bosques de Belgrado, a unos 20 kilómetros de Constantinopla.
La cisterna de Yerebatan (Yerebatan Sarnıcı, en turco) tiene unas dimensiones de 140 por 70 metros y se calcula que podía almacenar unos 100.000 m3 de agua.
La Basílica Cisterna tiene 336 columnas de 9 metros de altura. Los estilos de las columnas son muy variados, ya que fueron reutilizadas de antiguas estructuras y monumentos.
El paseo turístico se hace por unas pasarelas que van por encima del agua. Estas pasarelas fueron colocadas a finales del siglo XX, ya que anteriormente el paseo se hacía en barca.
Entre las 336 columnas de la basílica hay dos que tienen como base una cabeza de Medusa, el ser mitológico que convertía en piedra a quien la mirara.
Hay diversas teorías sobre que significan esas grandes cabezas en el interior de la cisterna, aunque la teoría más aceptada es que se pusieron ahí por fines prácticos, para ser usadas como base de las columnas.

Excellently captured mystic light and fine ancient vaults. Your new camera seems to be very good, but good results really depend one the one who handles the camera. You did a very good job capturing so many details of the architecture without spoiling the exciting atmosphere.

My congratulations Josep! I understand exactly what you are saying here, this is such a fantastic place to visit and yet so challenging to photograph. I have a number of really poor shots and I admire what you have managed here. Above all else you have captured the atmosphere of the place and it is easy for me to imagine myself back there. The plunged palace eh? Funny name.
The photo has tremendous appeal, the contrast of dark areas with smaller pockets of bright light make it very attractive. Its easy to see why you wanted to capture this one!

You definitely succeeded with this beautiful photo. I like the symmetry of the columns and arches, and the mysterious feeling of this place. The red light, and view of people at the far end, are also very nice. They are reflected in the cistern's water creating an interesting effect.

despite very high ISO you captured this scene in excellent quality and what is more important for me you were able to depict the lighing conditions very naturally,which makes the whole mood of the scene.
I´ve seen this place in some books or other photos,but your composition is by far much better!

Belle prise de vue de la Basilique Citerne que j'ai visitée il y a deux ans. Elle est très difficile à photographier et tu as très bien réussi. La lumière est superbe ainsi que la netteté. Félicitations.

Entiendo tu entusiasmo, la foto es de gran calidad pese a un ISO elevado (tal foto seria imposible con mi camera). La perspectiva dada por las columnas fortalece la impresion de profundidad. Me encanta la pequeña luz roja y las siluetas de los visitantes. Quizas hubiera cortado la primera columna de cada lado para concentrar la foto en la perspectiva.

Realmente has conseguido una foto que llama la atencion por el exelente manejo de las luces, que hasta permiten ver la textura de las columnas y ladrilllos del techo, asi como a los honbres de la derecha

Ademas de la tecnica la composicion es interesante asi omo la nota, raro que no permitan tripodes

No sabes lo que me alegro de que finalmente hayas podido conseguir esta foto!! Reto conseguido...y con nota!!

El no poder utilizar aquí el trípode es verdaderamente un hándicap, pero lo has solucionado muy bien mediante este ISO alto... y una exposición de 1/2 segundo!! Perfecta la luz, los detalles y las texturas de la piedra y ladrillo, una gran foto...felicidades...

You can be proud of this picture...Pin sharp with perfect exposure! I know for sure the problems for shooting here & I had trouble with ISO 1600 which is the maximum for my camera. This is the most favoured location for most photographers including myself & you have done superbly...only thing missing are the droplets of water from the ceiling :-)

hello Josep, Excellent photo from the Cistern. it maybe the most magical place in Istanbul, specially when there are not to many people around and you can here the music. Nice classical POV, great depth and sharpness.
But I was there only one week ago and the tripods were not prohibited, I used mine (tripods were prohibited in Topkapi and Hagia Sophia, I had to leave them), see my FB photos.

Preciosa... mi querido Josep,
Mis más sinceras felicitaciones por esta toma.
Yo sé la ilusión que te dió el resultado de esta imagen, pués en nuestro anterior viaje no pudiste hacerla con mi cámara, y por esta causa decidí regalarte la NIKON con la que haces unas imágenes excelentes.
Ya sabemos que la cámara no hace el fotógrafo, pero ayuda mucho.
Tienes que colgar más de este tema, pues hay más, y son excelentes.
Anímate y vuelve a estar más activo en la página, yo ya sé que muchos de tus amigos ya no están, pero aún hay muchos que esperan con ilusión ver tus bonitas imágenes, y que compartas con ellos tus sinceros y razonados comentários.
