Photographer's Note

Selimiye Mosque, historically known as Cathedral of Saint Sophia, is a former Roman Catholic cathedral converted into a mosque, located in North Nicosia. It is the main mosque of the city. The Selimiye Mosque is housed in the largest and oldest surviving Gothic church in Cyprus. In total, the mosque has a capacity to hold 2500 worshipers.
Outside it looks a bit strange, as the gothic cathedral with added two minarets. Inside maybe even more strange. The interior looks like Gothic church white painted, but with the red carpet and such mosque elements as minbar (a pulpit in the mosque where the imam stands to deliver sermons) and mihrab(a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the qibla; that is, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
