Photographer's Note

Originally built in 1441, Herstmonceux Castle is now owned by Queens' University in Canada and is used as an International Study Centre.

The castle was built with brick, an unusual choice of material at the time. In the late 18th Century the castle was dismantled. It lay in ruins until the early 1900s, when it was restored. The exterior looks much the same as it would have when it was originally built, however they changed the lay-out of the inner courtyards during the restoration.
