Photographer's Note

Cemetery at Iona Abbey.

Entering the grounds of Iona Abbey through the cemetery gate, I was struck by how the scene in front of me was framed by the tree overhead, and decided to incorporate it into the composition.
It's one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've seen, a very peaceful place close to the sea.
There are a number of graves of unknown sailors washed ashore during the two world wars. The inscription "A sailor of the Great War" appears on a number of gravestones. The grave of John Smith, the former leader of the Labour Party, is also here.
