Photographer's Note

During the rut, the stags dig shallow scrapes in which they urinate, and then roll and wallow in the resulting mixture. This is to strengthen their smell - to warn off other stags. It certainly warned me off. This stag had gathered his harem and was kept busy watching out for interlopers and searching out does ready for mating. During the rut the stags eat little and are left weakened, sometimes succumbing to the following winterís weather.
