Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

Please open The Union Canal Reaches the Wheel in a larger format.

This is my second black and white photograph and it shows the approach, along the Union Canal, to the point where the Falkirk Wheel begins its job of carrying boats from this upper canal to the Forth and Clyde Canal 24 metres (79 ft) below.
Of course, it also carries boats upwards, from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal.

I really liked how the repeating metal arches created an interesting sense of perspective. The last one, revealing the 'teeth of the huge cog wheel' which is part of the lifting system.

It only takes the energy required to boil 8 kettles to lift the boats between the two levels. Remarkable!!

Thanks for your interest, Bev :-)
