Photographer's Note

London is one major tourist destination so it’s inevitable when visiting the most famous of its monuments to finds crowds of tourists from all over the world. I came here to photograph the famous Tower of London (which lies to the left of this photo) but at that hour of the day it was impossible to shot a decent photo of it for the long queue of tourists waiting to enter into it. The sky was partially cloudy but with a strong sunshine coming through the clouds once in a while, so lot of people were strolling on the foot path along the Thames, or drinking in one of the several bars or cafeterias spread around the tower. This dock, where one can embark on the boats who sail along the river, was the only place relatively empty of people, because the last boat has just left. This couple, probably waiting their turn to get into the tower, were consulting a guide. I thought the scene was worth to be photographed.

Interesting and accurate notes, Donato. I recognise this area well, for when I visit London, I stay in a hotel quite near Tower Bridge. I have seen many shots of Tower Bridge and thought it difficult to get a new aspect, but you have proved me wrong. You have really given it an exciting context and, at the same time, captured the busy, touristy atmosphere of the city. There are so many interesting details to enjoy but none is overpowering the next. For its ambience, this could be one for London Tourist Board.

Hi Donato,
nice composition with the iconic backdrop of tower bridge.
looking at your shot and the lack of significant shadowing in the bins this shot looks like it has been through HDR processing. Don't misunderstand me, i like the use of HDR as it is a progression of photography.

Well composed with great clarity, details and sharpness with lots of activity. Lovely color saturation and good exposure control. A picture with great depth and perspective, good that you have taken full advantage of the sky's dramatic appearance. The stunning color of the tourist drag my eye straightaway, very eyecatchching strong element.
Great capture, Congrats.
I have one issue to highlight, noticed magenta line along the edge of roof structure on right hand corner.

You have found a unique part of London that seems to be less known, in order to get a beautiful shot of the famous Bridge. I love the threatening sky here and the vibrant colours contrasting in the foreground below. I always found London very difficult to shoot because of the many white skies and strange light - very different from the light here in Australia and over there in Italia. So you have done a superb job here.

quite strong pp here. For sure worth shooting scene here. Very attractive composition and colours.
My son is now postdoc in Cambridge and I will visit him in May but still do not know what to choose - longer stay in London or rather to see some Scotland or Wales or Ireland. There are so many places to see there! Diifficult task.

Très intéressante cette édition en HDR, qui donne un coté peinture à ta photo! La composition est très bien vue et le cadrage avec le fameux pont bien choisi malgré les poubelles au premier plan!

Hi Donato,

Thousand and thousands of photos must have been taken of tower bridge but this one feels unique. You found a perspective that few people would even notice and the inclusion of the couple carefully studying the guide book is really great and on top of everything a marvellous lighting. Even a the garbage bin in the foreground is sort of attractive. TFS and have nice weekend!

Tower Bridge sous ce ciel me fait penser à l'atmosphère de certains films sur l'époque Victorienne, notamment le dernier Sherlock... Une belle et colorée prise de vue avec beaucoup de détails et une excellente lumière je trouve. Ici on remarque bien aussi que la Tamise est brassée par beaucoup de courant... Intéressant coup d'oeil, merci Donato.

i'm still not sure if i'm a fan of HDR, sometimes i like the look, sometimes i don't.
i'm going to forget about the HDR and just focus on the photo itself.
First of all, where is this in london? is there a specific name for this pier? i want to shoot shots here too one day!
love the composition, with the wast baskets to the right, the rails, the tall post, the majestic bridge and cables that flow, and of course the powerful clouds.
its a great composition you took here

At first sight looked like a HDR...the effect of the dark broody clouds is excellent over the tower bridge. Have to say, your PP is very skillful here & barring a slight bit of purple fringing to the right, everything's spot on! A familiar landmark, yet the view you show here is very fresh indeed!

Ciao Donato,una composizione quasi apocalittica e davvero ben realizzata,con questa coppia che sembra formata da 2 attori messi li' apposta.L'elaborazione e' davvero spinta al limite del consentito,anzi...mi girano un po' le scatole pensando ad un mio hdr che e' stato rimosso per eccessivo PP e che era molto meno elaborato di questo...ehehe (non ce l'ho con te ovvimamente..ma con l'admin che fa' il bello e il cattivo tempo a seconda dell'umore)...buona giornata.Luciano

Ciao Donato. You have chosen a great point of view and made a great composition out of it. The couple loooks very nice in there and the details are amazing even in the distant tower.
I read the discussions; did you use Photomatix for the hdr? If you did, maybe it was better to use softer light and less saturation to avoid the cables color 'problem'.
Anyway the photo looks great with that amazing sky.

A different angle on Tower Bridge..!
Landmarks like this are always difficult to photograph since every angle has been tried before, but this is successful with many unusual elements...
A well framed scene with interesting emphasis to the couple of tourists!

strana foto, indubbiamente interessante e piacevole, alla quale hai dato una luce particolare. Trovo curioso e interessante questa coppia di turisti che tranquillamente consultano una mappa avendo un cielo drammaticamente apocalittico alle loro spalle. La nitidezza è sbalorditiva, così pure la profondità di campo. Una foto da gustare pixel per pixel, visto l'enorme qualtità di dettagli perfettamente definiti. E' sempre bello e utile vedere qualcosa di nuovo in TE. Bravissimo!
