Stormy Liverpool, a photo from Merseyside, England

Photographer's Note

I visited Liverpool this winter for a week and as I expected the weather was horrible. On the first day I took a ferry on the Mersey river and stayed the entire time inside because of the rain and strong wind. At some point when I was totally disappointed with the lack of pictures the sun came out literally for one minute and the view has changed dramatically. I was quite lucky to be close to the famous Liver Building which is on the right side of the photo. It is a I Grade listed building in Liverpool and one of its trademarks. The birds on the towers are supposed to watch over the city and the sea and legend has it that the moment they fly away the city will cease to exist.

adoro i cieli polarizzati e tempestosi mentre il sole illumina il paesaggio prima della tempesta.
Una ripresa splendida nella quale ha grande rilievo anche la composizione, sicuramente perfetta.
Ottima luce e perfetto bilanciamento del colore insieme ad una nitidezza impeccabile rendo la fotografia grandiosa e spettacolare.

Wow, the sun made a very special effort for you here Kamila. How beautiful Liverpool looks in this light. A city I haven't visited for years but a place that I have fond memories of and your shot is super. The sky makes a wonderfully atmospheric and contrasting backdrop to the familiar cityscape.

I have to admit to not having been to Liverpool and probably the only UK city that I haven't visited. The light is superb in this stormy weather giving depth to the image. Perhaps the tilt needs correcting but nevertheless a superb shot.

despite being a huge Beatles fan I have never been to Liverpool. It is a place the I really want to visit but never seem to get around to it. This shot shows me just what I am missing. The light and mood in this fine image are captivating and the detailing just awesome. Love it!

The magnificent and prominent building on right, is on an enlarged print version hanging on our livingroom, a scanned version I posted long ago. It was a bond-storage on the port of Liverpool. Nowadays I see it is surrounded by newer and more modern building along.
Fine afternoon light enhanced beautifully the waterfront edifices.

Wonderful contrast between the sun lit buildings and the stormy sky above them. This is truly a very attractive take on the Liverpool waterfront. A further proof that bad weather sometimes can provide us with the most stunning light conditions and photo opps.

Hello Kamila,
At first glance I almost thought you were still in China. This riverfront would not be totally unlike the one in Shanghai, or at least what that looked like a couple of decades ago before the skyscrapers dwarfed the colonial style buildings. This brief spell of sunshine created a fabulous light which was enhanced by the contrast with the black clouds.

Hi Kamila.
I would never have associated the skyline in the thumbnail with liverpool, so thanks for a unique and new view! I do know the Liver building, a great icon and one which has a connection in Dublin too, the Liver insurance offices in south Dublin also have a large liver bird standing on the sign, though the building is mon, low rise and horrible, not like this beauty. The sunlight has made a beautiful visn here, especially with the background sky being so threatening. Very nice scene of this city.

Both the weather and the skyline surprised me in seeing this photo, but I guess neither should. It's been a very long time since the last time I saw Liverpool. The photo depicts a living museum, with buildings spanning several hundred years. The note is gift for Trekearth members like me who like a complete package.

Cześć Kamilka, Twoja notka przypomniała mi moją szalona wycieczkę do Liverpoolu w grudniu. Też zaraz po obejrzeniu ulicy beatlesów, wybrałam sie na taki rejs po rzece Mersey. Krótka chwila niesamowitego światła i dobrze ja wykorzystałaś. Wspaniałe zdjęcie.

Hi Kamila,
A great capture, a really atmospheric scene with the bright water front and gloomy sky. Great detail in the buildings with good depth.
The building in the bottom left of the shot has a glass lift at the front which goes to the 4th floor giving a great view of the River Mersey. Also this is where the cruise ships berth.

it seems to be that Liverpool is having some sort of revival of late - or at least thats what i hear from people on TE.

lots of new modern architecture and such.

I would not think this is England at first glance, but surely it is.

well, at least you got yourself an atmospheric photo :)
not the weather you'd hoped for, but the result is still pretty good!

just be aware of tilt correcting the horizon line, i'll have to read the discussion you had with Ann :)

Hello Kamila,

Isn't it disappointing when the weather doesn't behave!! I have a similar shot from a ferry that I took down the Manchester Ship Canal, starting at Manchester and ending at Albert Docks. The view is very similar but without the sudden spasm of light! In fact, I turned most of my shots to b&w because they were already so monochrome!
However, this is the classic shot showing the approach to Liverpool. The Liver Building, with its two Liver Birds is perfectly placed, being the culmination of the view from l/r across the frame. I love how the buildings are lit by the low sun and how well they show off against the black, threatening sky.

zla pogoda nierzadko oznacza rowniez wspaniale swiatlo. Niestety zwykle przy zlej pogodzie nie chce mi sie wychodzic z domu... Wspaniale swiatlo z ciekawie oswietlona architektura na tle czrnego groznego nieba.
Bardzo efektownie to wyglada. Niewykluczone ze bede mial okazje odwiedzic Liverpool w tym roku w sierpniu ale nie jest to jeszcze pewne na pewno wybralbym sie wowczas zeby zobaczyc ten wlasnie widok, moze o blue hour?

I saw one image of that building at right once. I like this kind of image with sunlight in the main subjects and the dark and stormy weather ahead. interesting the shapes of the building at left. like me, you forgot to correct the line of horizon. haha.

This is an excellent photo, the beautiful Liverpool buildings are in superb late afternoon (??) light. The contrast against darker dramatic sky is perfect. You have really got the perfect lighting conditions for this outstanding photo. Focusing is very good, allowing to see all the nice details.
