Photographer's Note

Graffiti featuring the Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi, with the message "The Only Real Freedom is Freedom from Fear", and the rest of the speech she gave written into the picture, Vine Street, North Laine, Brighton, East Sussex.

Burmese social democratic stateswoman, politician, diplomat and author, Aung San Suu Kyi now serves as the First and incumbent State Counsellor and Leader of the National League for Democracy. She is also the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and the Minister of President's Office in President Htin Kyaw's Cabinet. Although she was prohibited from becoming the President due to a clause in the constitution – her late husband and children are foreign citizens – she assumed the newly created role of State Counsellor, a role akin to a Prime Minister or a head of government.

This graffito is made out of the text of her famous 1990 speech, the transcript of which is here. The speech is inspirational; the graffito so cleverly achieved. Sadly it's subsequently been painted over, as a virtual visit to the location (see Map info) will verify.
