Kiev - St. Sophia’s Cathedral

You really thought I had already finished with my golden domes?
Who has been in Kiev, knows there is no end to it :)

The construction of St. Sophia's Cathedral began in 1037 although much of the Baroque exterior dates from the 18th century.

Its name (meaning Holy Wisdom) comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul) and does not refer to a saint named Sophia.

It is famous for ancient mosaics and frescoes.
Several princes of Kiev are buried here as well as the cathedral's founder, Yaroslav I the Wise.

On one of my previous pictures I have presented you the beautiful bell tower of this cathedral.
