Khotyn Fortress

Khotyn is located at about thirty kilometers south-west of Kamianets-Podilskyi.
It is known for the Khotyn Fortress whose construction began in 1325.
Major improvements were made in the 1380s and in the 1460s.

The fortress overlooking the Dniester River has been the setting of many historical adventure movies, among other Taras Bulba from 2009.

At first I did not intend to visit this fort. But a very friendly family from Kiev who traveled with their car and stayed in the same bed & breakfast in Kamianets-Podilskyi as I was staying in, invited me to go with them to Khotyn and to visit the fort.
It's always nice to make visits together with anyone from the country in which you’re traveling.

On the side of the wall of the fortress a large dark spot is visible. See picture in the WS.
One legend says that the spot was created by the tears of the Khotyn rebels that were killed inside the fortress during their fight with the Ottoman Turks.
Another legend says the spot was created by the tears of a girl named Oksana whom the Turks buried alive in the walls of the fort.

Information from the Lonely Planet guide and from Wikipedia.

I’ve been able to escape the Belgian winter for some time but I still have some pictures of Ukraine to show before starting a new series.
