From Satan, a photo from Presovsky, East

Photographer's Note

Satan is the one of the most outstanding summit in High Tatra and the highest summit in Hreben Bast (“Ridge of Dungeons”) – huge rocky wall ascending between Mengusovska Valley and Mlynicka Valley. It is a part of the longest lateral ridge of High Tatra, which culminates in Kriváň. Except Hrebeň Bašt and Kriváň there are following summits such as Štrbský Štit / Szczyrbski Szczyt, Hrubý Vrch / Hruby Wierch, Soliska / Grań Solisk and Ostrá / Ostra.

Even though there is no marked route leading on the top this summit is much often visited by tourists than by climbers, first of all for a beautiful view which spreads on a whole Mengusovska Valley with its all branches in the north-east direction, Gerlachvsky Stit in the east and Krivan Group in the west.

For me it is one of the most beautiful panoramas in the High Tatras.

Satan has two summits: the north and the south with similar altitude at 2,432 m

The Slovakian and Polish name means “satan” and refers to a legend about devil, which hid gemstones in SatanovZlab / Szatanowy Zleb (Devil’s Couloir) (falling down from Satanovo Sedlo). A shepherd, which pastured sheeps in Mengusovska Valley, prompted a wizard to find this treasure. But when they started to look for in the couloir the devil stoned them. And till today when climbers want to reach the summit by this couloir stones fall down.

Cześć Piotrze, Takie wysokogórskie widoki to nie dla mnie, piękne na zdjeciu, ale tam być to bym się już bała. Cieszę się, ze się odzywasz, przerażające to co się zdarzyło na Giewoncie. Ale Ty byś i tak nie szedł tam z tłumem. I chyba patrzysz, jaka będzie pogoda.

Bonjour, cher piotr,
Ce paysage est vraiment satanique, tout est sauvage en haut de ces montagnes arides.
La plaine en contre-bas est noyée en partie par de petits nuages suspendus du plus bel effet.
Quant à l'effet de perspective c'est superbe.

Hello Piotr,

Even the title 'Satan' suggests that this might be a trial to reach.
However, I cannot argue, this is a most spectacular view. There seems little of 'man' in this scene, just nature!
The sense of depth is remarkable, whilst the inclusion of the clouds emphasises the height of those steep, rocky walls!

Piotr, the view at the summit is really breathtaking. The hikers can discover the valley further down as well as the rocky crests in the surroundings. The landscape in altitude is entirely mineral, only mosses can grow here.

Barren landscape at heights of the Tatra, no snow this time of the year, Piotr, but I am sure during winter it looks completely different in white.
The far side valley and the trough on right gave good sense of depth and scale.

this one is a little bit different from the others because we get to see the rocky terrain up close and personal. I would like to know again, how long of a hike this is, and what degree of difficulty it is - I think that would add so much to the note and photo :) Also because I want to hike it haha.
