Photographer's Note

It is said that Tatranská Lomnica is one of the largest and the most beautiful Tatras villages. It is situated 6 km east of Smokovec on the foothills of Lomnický Peak. There have been several owners of this area since 1209. In 1209 Tatranská Lomnica was a subject of the first royal donation of the King Ondrej II. The last private owner of the village was Ondrej Spóner. The area was bought by Hungarians at the times of Austria – Hungary monarchy in 1892 and the first state spa in the High Tatras as well as a village Tatranská Lomnica were founded there. The Hotel Lomnica, the largest hotel in the High Tatras at that time, was built in 1893. Another facilities including a remarkable Spa House with a swimming pool and water treatment were built later. The representative Grand Hotel was built in 1905 and in 1919 it acquired a new name – The Grandhotel Praha. A lot of sport fields, ski and sledge track, ice rink and tennis courts were built up.Between the World wars numerous family pensions and private residencies were built. The biggest modern Morava Recovery Building was founded in 1933. The main tourist attraction of the village, a suspended cable car to Skalnaté Pleso and Lomnický Peak, was built between 1937-1940. Its construction supported building of astronomical and meteorological stations near Skalnaté pleso and on Lomnický Peak.In the 1960´s and 70´s Tatranská Lomnica became a major centre of recreation for trade union members in Slovakia. Many new hotels (Slovan, Horec), recovery houses (Urán, Odborár, Slovakia, Sasanka, Družba – nowadays Willi) were built there. The World Championship contributed to further development of the village. A new cabin cable car from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso was constructed and later it replaced the old one. Thanks to the world´s meeting of the members of the Association of Camping and Caravanning a new recreational centre with accommodation services was built south of Tatranská Lomnica. Nowadays this facility is known as Eurocamp FICC and it includes a reception building, a bar, bungalows, shops, a sauna and a swimming pool.
