Hoje há conquilhas
(Today there are clams)

Shot at the delightful 9 km long Atlantic beach of Ilha de Tavira (Tavira island).
It was baixamar (low tide), there was almost no wind and we decided to walk from Barril beach
to the eastern tip of the island, the Tavira city beach, a 7 km walk.
Along the way we encountered some 15 clam (conquilhas) collectors, trawling an open cage with a long and narrow net attached to it and using a lot of force to scrape away a centimeter of sand to get the clams. A tough job. This man was examining his harvest and he said that he was pleased with his catch.

Conquilhas are a bit smaller than améijoas and are a delicacy, an essential element of a ‘frutas do mar’ plate.

After taking the little ferry back to the 4 aguas landing point, we went to the restaurant with the same name not far from it, hoping that there would be conquilhas on the menu. And we were not disappointed.
