Photographer's Note
ENG - ITA - FRA
As in a lot they know, I am passionate about butterfly photography. But I have always worked in nature, and I had never been in a butterfly house, which are some kind of zoo where you can see many rare species. I was shocked by the visit of the butterfly house in Krakow. A real lager. A large room located on the first floor of a building in the center, where the butterflies have no chance to feed and remain glued to the walls. Even worse, see how they are treated and how children reduce them. I am speechless, I hope that this place will be closed as soon as possible and I am sorry to have paid the entrance that has contributed to its maintenance. In the pictures you can see how the wings are damaged, while the butterfly in the lower right corner was actually dead. Luckily there are other better butterfly houses, like the one Paul VDV told us about in his last post.

Hello Luciano,
The place that I visited on the island Ometepe was a delimited part of the nature reserve Charco Verde. I called it a 'butterfly farm' because that's the name being used in other places but I do not really know how to describe it correctly. It's a place where butterflies were supposed to live as in nature. The domain had a lot of flowers. Yet the butterflies received additional nutrition in the form of fruit. Ultimately, these animals can not leave that demarcated domain and consequently it's a kind of prison.
Living on a limited surface these animals are under more pressure from the visitors than if they would have the wide world as their habitat. A nature reserve must always be large enough to allow animals to live as in nature.
I admit it was rather easy to take pictures of butterflies there while I had never succeeded in taking a decent photo of a butterfly before. But actually it remains a life in captivity, one that may be more luxurious than others.
If I understand well you've visited a building in Krakow where butterflies 'lived' on the first floor. This without food or any possible form of natural environment. A very strange thing and I understand your displeasure when you saw this place with your own eyes.
Your intention here is therefore not to show us pictures of the beauty of butterflies but to formulate a complaint against unnecessary animal suffering in which I fully support you.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Luciano
I can instantly see why this photo is on TE and not TN. This butterlfy house is bizarre - having no foliage so not even prentending to have a naturalish setting. Despite that the photo is clear and sharp.
cheers

Hello Luciano,
It looks awful indeed. At the first moment I didn't like the title but after reading your note I understand your intention.
I was in the Butterfly house in Vienna some years ago. It was a big high hall, full of flowers, like orangerie. I found it interesting that special flowers attracted the special kinds of butterflies. When I was in Vienna later I visited it once more but I was a bit disappointed.
The zoo is always kind of prison for the animals. But it can be also the way of preserving them. And often it is the place for education.
Kind regrads Malgo

Hello Luciano,
The only good thing about this butterfly park is that we appreciate the images that you and Silvio upload that much more. It's like comparing McDonalds to the very finest Italian restaurant. That said, all 4 images are sharp & well framed and cropped. Tfs!

Ciao Luciano
probabilmente quando hanno chiuso Auschwitz si sono dimenticati di chiudere questo luogo di tortura....
Non è mai piacevole avere certe notizie, di qualsiasi vivente si tratti.

Hello Luciano,
Step by step, looking at the photos, seeing the title and reading your note I realized that this is not one of your usual butterfly photos. I would be more upset to see tigers or bears or similar animals living in small cages in a zoo, but I understand why this place in Krakow made you outraged. Luckily I did not see this "museum" in Krakow, so I didn't pay for its maintenance. A place like this is not needed by anyone, so I hope it will go bankrupt and be forced to close.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Luciano,
A sorry set of specimens. I have always been rather disappointed by the so-called butterfly farms I have visited; the one I went to in Malaysia was no better unfortunately. The only advantage as far as I am concerned is that the insects tend to stay motionless for longer. Then, they would if they were dead I suppose!

Hello Luciano,
At first this looks like a wonderful collection of some beautiful butterflies and their gorgeous and varied patterns on their wings. But after more carefully examining the photo, one can see how sad these butterflies look with their broken wings. Certainly not the right way to treat these beautiful animals.

Ciao Caro Luciano,
Thank you for alerting us to this tragedy!
I can see no point in having a butterfly house where the main attraction, the butterflies are mistreated or dead! It is so contrary to the modern trend of caring for and protecting creatures!
That being said, this is a fine photograph to send your message to other TE members!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hello Luciano,
As you describe the butterfly garden in Krakow, it is indeed better that it closes. Fortunately, there are many examples of good butterfly gardens, such as in Artis, the zoo of Amsterdam. When I come there (usually once a year) I try to make some nice pictures of butterflies, but that hardly succeeds because the many species flutter happily among the many flowers and shrubs.
Have a good Sunday, groet Rob

It is very, very sad, these butterfies are so beautiful, and even in the zoo they can have better conditions, I do not understand people who are supposed to care for butterflies

Hi Luciano.
Well sir, these butterflies are gorgeous. And must
be the only nice and beautiful thing that can be seen in
Auschwitz
An image to enjoy, with its beautiful colors, great luminosity and perfect sharpness.
Superbly captured. I love.
Happy start of the week
Very best regards.

Ciao caro Luciano,
This is absolutely appalling! It makes me sad and also very angry to read your note and also to see your photographs (all perfectly and beautifully taken) of these desperate creatures. Were they really stuck to the walls and unable to move? If so, this is indeed the Auschwitz of Butterflies.
I must confess that I have never been to a butterfly house and, now I have seen your excellent but disturbing post today, I don't think I shall ever visit one.
A perfect upload for TE but a very distressing one too.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Luciano,
Yes, I can see the damaged wings of the pretty butterflies. We should treat the creatures nicely if we are going to imprison them, shouldn't we? 👍

ciao Luciano
ciao, Giacomo

Hi Luciano
wow, how is this place still operating? this is terrible.
How do they get away with it? Let the butterflies fly free and roam around. You have opened my eyes to this, I didn't know they had farms like this where they are stuck to the wall.
Shame on them. Thanks for bringing this to my attention
cheers

Thought a lot what to write about this picture, Luciano.
As one would expect a butterflies displayed room, I'd say let them fly...
Anyway, I know your passion for those flyers, totally agree to the note written.
My best regards,
