Polish (Eastern) Life - Page 15

Podlasie is inhabited by quite a population of Belarussians. They speak their own language, among themselves in particular. For many years their national consciouseness was being suppresed by socialistic government. And for the last 16 years it has been reversed with the growing pride of that minority.
I spent in that village of Trywieza over one hour speaking with the locals who turned out to be most hospital and friendly, they showed me the their houses and told their stories. The very woman on the picture (78 years old) proudly presented me with the outdoor of her old house remembering the end of 19th century, originally carved, with its own history. She lives there alone in that house, her two daughters converted into urban Poles living in towns.
The village has several houses listed as cultural and historical monuments of the region. The one on the picture belongs to the group.

Photo: still experimenting a bit with over-contrasting in order to achieve the surrealistic effect of the images (of the place which was so nice and friendly that I thought it could not be real, itself).
