Photographer's Note

This photo is a "vertical panorama". Please click on LARGE VERSION to see it all! --- The Russian boats seem to have been there, abandoned for a long time. They are well preserved in the cold climate. I am actually surprised they were not used as fire wood. The reason may be, they are located very near to the second largest Russian coal mining area on Spitsbergen. Coal was therefore readily available for fire. On any other place on the island these boats wouldn't have survived, because whale hunters or occasional stranded sailors would have used the wood ... The cottage in the background is a modern holiday cottage of a Norvegian from Longyearbyen, I guess. It was a fantastic evening!
