Photographer's Note

A window cleaner in his suspended cart outside the facade of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Neutelings Riedijk) museum building, shot from the grand, staircase.

Neutelings Riedijk specializes in public buildings. They’re well known for the use of grand, multifunctional staircases and as shown here the use of strategic ornamention that seeks to strengthemn the identy of the building . In Naturalis, it’s biomorphic.

About the museum: "Naturalis is a combined experience of seeing and doing. In the galleries, you will learn everything about the earliest life on earth, about the Netherlands in the Ice Age and about the immense forces of our planet". Source: Naturalis.

This maybe a wee bit abstract, so in the Workshop a staff member is shown working on one of the things the museum does – the reassembling of 6 fossilized Triceratops. The fossil-part the geologist is holding wasa part of the giant shield of the beast. It probably had no defensive function and was coloured and feathered, traces of creatine where found on the shield. We were told that the fossilized remains were found in the USA. The 6 triceratops died (probably drowned) together in a swamp. So the research crew in Leiden are sorting the fossils now, trying to reconstruct the 6 individuals. Using DNA for this was obviously not an option, using the specific shape of the fossilized cell structure is, since it’s unique to each individual. This part is handled by an American member of the team who’s is currently PhD-ing on the subject - he's in the BG of the WS pic.

(NB: the WS text got truncated, it should be "Oh, and I sometimes forget that when you shoot street style (which was silly by the way, since I asked if I could take a picture and got consent) not using the EVF (viewfinder), the screen flipped out and the cam in a low position while making a portrait, the visual rendition of the eye contact gets alas lost.")

A larger view is here.

The soundtrack? ‘Van The Man’- Cleaning windows.
