Photographer's Note

GIETHOORN is a village in northern Overijssel which is very popular with Asian tourists who love to go boatriding (often quite clumsily) through the canals in this little "Venice of the North".

Giethoorn recently featured in Grand Hotel Europa, a brilliant novel by Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, one of my favourite Dutch writers, so we wanted to see it for real, making us yet a somewhat different kind of tourist there. Yet, it is kind of ironic, of course, since the novel is about (the downsides of) tourism, to begin with.

Old Europe, with its culture and authenticity, becomes a kind of nostalgic playground for rich masses from rest of the world, while the poor swarm to Europe for other reasons. Both will transform the old continent.

For this picture, though, I managed to avoid Asians in boats.
