The Citadel Maze

This is another impression of the Cittadella in Victoria, the capital of the Maltese island of Gozo. The northern end of the citadel is a bit of a maze. I think this photo shows it rather well, but I added another one to the workshop to make it even clearer. Seen here is once again the Cathedral of the Assumption, completed in 1711, but here seen from an opposite angle compared to my previous shot. The Citadella walkway on top of the ramparts offers a very nice view of the island of Gozo, which you can see in a second workshop photo.

Ja, dit zicht herken ik omdat ik een vergelijkbare foto maakte ... doch niet zo goed als deze hier.
Mooi met het kleine labyrint van de muurtjes en gebouwen op de voorgrond en met de enkele bomen tussenin.
Ik heb Victoria ervaren als een klein maar gezellige plaatsje om even te verblijven.

Hello Lars, the sharp quality of all three shots is fantastic, well done.
The view in your main post is very interesting, with the ‘maze’ in the foreground, this part looks very old.
I like both workshop pictures, #2 could have been a main post there are so many things to see.

Opnieuw een heel mooi gedetailleerde foto met de oude bouwwerken.
U speelt ook mooi met schaduw en licht waardoor er mooie acties in beeld komen.

Hej Lars,
Den här bilden får mig direkt att tänka på Nordafrika. Kyrktornet hade mycket väl kunnat vara en minaret, och gyttret av murar i förgrunden känns typiskt för till exempel Marocko. Ljuset och färgerna känns också nordafrikanskt. Bilden är fint balanserad och WS-bilderna är också väldigt intressanta. Utsikten över ön är fascinerande och hade kunnat vara en officiell bild. Jag antar att den visar ön norrut. Jag åkte buss till en ort på nordkusten och tog sedan en lång promenad tillbaka till Victoria.

Your Malta sereis has no end, that sounds exciting.
Of cource your posting images are so beautiful but your postings have changed my image for Malta. I though that Malta is so small coutry or island only, but through seeing your nice shots, I understand this country has so deep and nice culture and history. Thanks for your sharing.

A very impressively composed and shooting point in beautiful light abound of detail by focusing strongly on quality of the two iconic towers. I love the depth, shade and shadow you managed, with gorgeous soft honeyed tones creating such a wonderful contrast to blue sky. The tiny fig is so well spotted and timely included as a vital scale reference. Quality shot, great work!

Hi Lars,

There were similar stone walls in the red fort at Grenada. Perhaps they were store rooms, stables or living quarters for servants? Obviously the wooden superstructure is long gone. Either through fire, aging and rotting or both. Like Grenada, Malta was under Arab Muslim rule for centuries, and this construction appears to be Arabic in design & origin. The Normans liberated Malta in 1127 AD. Tfs!

Hello Lars,

I like these detailed photographs of Gozo and they also bring back memories of places I visited before I was interested in taking photographs myself. You are being a very accomplished memory jogger! 😀
The light on the Citadel is glorious, illuminating the walls and defining their structure in detail.
The two vertical structures balance one another nicely.

The w/s, particularly the maze example really shows how easy it could be to get lost amongst these merging walls!
