Victoria Cittadella

This is the capital city of the island of Gozo, Victoria (Maltese: Il-Belt Victoria, also known as Rabat). Located centrally on the island, it has got almost 7,000 inhabitants. The Cittadella (Maltese: Iċ-Ċittadella) is located in the heart of the city. The present fortifications of the citadel were built in the 15th and early 16th century, but it is believed that the site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and served as the acropolis in the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos, which was converted into a castle during the Middle Ages. It was very quiet in and around the citadel, because it was New Year’s Day, when literally everything is closed in Malta.

Hi Lars,

A fantastic shot of this mighty citadel, built to repel invasions from Ottoman fleets. Good sharpness and a fine upward pov. I like the layering in the composition. Looks like the lower level approach was added much later as it is smoother and lighter toned than the main castle in the bg. Tfs!

Hej Lars,
Liksom andra drar jag slutsatsen att den nedre byggnaden kring trappan är betydligt nyare än den stora fästningen. Men de passar ganska bra ihop i både färg och form. Det är en ståtlig anläggning, även alldeles folktom. Det fina ljuset bidrar till det goda intrycket.

Hello Lars,

This does look like a very formidable building, perfectly sharp and beautifully presented in your photograph. There doesn't look to be any way of entering other than the designated stairway, overlooked on every side.
For winter, the weather looks perfect for photography!

Hallo Lars,
Ik heb deze citadel ook bezocht en uiteraard foto's genomen. Toch om één of andere reden niet van dit zicht. Waarom niet is me nu een raadsel.
Vanop dit standpunt ziet de citadel er enorm robuust uit. Werkelijk oninneembaar!
Na hoeveel tijd zal de steenkleur van het nieuwe gedeelte lijken op die van de oude muren?
Prachtige scherpe foto genomen onder een staalblauwe lucht.

Hello Lars, it is very impressive, and you took it from a good angle so that we can see many of its features. The bright sunshine brings out the beautiful ochre colour of the stone.

Weer even een poging iets van mijn achterstand weg te werken.
Een opmerkelijke foto waarbij het lijkt of de oude citadel op een nieuw fundament is gebouwd. Dat beeld wordt nog versterkt door de trappen en trapleuningen.
