Ġnejna Bay

Time for some more of Malta’s coastline, I will probably show other pictures of it later as well, including a photo of the part of the Gozo coastline where the Azure Window once stood, as some of you requested last week.

This photo was taken on the western coast of the island of Malta and shows Ġnejna Bay, located not far from the village of Mġarr. The beach here is sandy and surrounded by limestone cliffs. On top of the cliffs, called the Wardija Ridge, at about 100 metres above sea level, is Lippija Tower (Maltese: Torri ta' Lippija), a watchtower from 1637. Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellar ordered its construction as part of the coastal defence network developed by the Knights of St. John. Lippija Tower is the oldest of the nine watchtowers which were built by the Knights between 1637 and 1652.
