Photographer's Note

The view from the Citadel of Victoria, Gozo, spans the entire island. The location was first fortified in the bronze age, c. 1500 B.C., and possibly before that. Later it was a Phoenician fortress and eventually an acropolis complex was built here by Roman times. The current structure dates large from 1600.

Dominating the view is the dome of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Xewkija. The church was consecrated in 1978 and is capped by a 246 foot tall dome with a diameter of 89 feet. Itís the largest church on Gozo and its high position is visible from many parts of the island. Itís modeled on the church of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice.
