Photographer's Note

Locality of the municipality of Poggiodomo, seat of agrarian commonality, rises on a spur that rapidly degrades on three sides perched around the parish church. Around 15 people live there throughout the year.
In the XIII century, during the municipal expansion of Cascia, the houses within the walls were abandoned. A new castle was built on the slope in front of the Tissino, called Roccha Tamboris (to want to continue the ancient Lombard curtis of Castaldato Pontano). An outpost of the Casciano territory and a Ghibelline stronghold on the outermost borders with the territory of the Guelph Spoleto, Roccatamburo fell prey to the Spoleto in 1528, returning then under the lordship of Cascia. The Bishop Lascaris in 1712 describes it as surrounded by walls and towers, very populated, with three churches in its territory.
The urban typology is that of the slope castle, erected in the domain of the Tissino Valley, perfectly aligned with the centers of Usigni, Poggiodomo and Rocchetta, along the route, which, coming from Sabina and Monteleone di Spoleto, reached the road junction of Cerreto di Spoleto. The access road from upstream leads slightly downhill towards the perched center, compact around the Church of San Nicola. Today an ogival door, about m high. 5, which was supposed to be an entrance to the castle, is buffered and almost halved by a new construction. In a more backward position than the central core, the building fabric thins out. Two steeply sloping paths descend towards the valley floor, reaching the Hermitage of the Madonna della Stella. Two monastic cells stood at the time of the Lombards in the Tissino Valley (which between Monte Maggio and Monte Coscerno from Usigni descends towards the Nera River): one in Val di Noce, the other where the parish church of Santa Maria Annunziata was built.
