The fortresses of the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle
With the decline of the power of the Spoleto dukes, the Saracens had a free hand to freely devote themselves to their raids, in the last years of the ninth century the abbey of San Pietro in Valle, was taken, plundered and burned, so it was abandoned and remained in ruins for a century.
Only in 996, the emperor Otto III of Saxony, directed to Rome to encircle the imperial crown, gave orders to restore churches and monasteries devastated by raids. The abbey of Ferentillo regained the full possession of its assets and substantial funds for reconstruction, to protect it from the continuing raids of the Saracens was built a series of fortifications on which the Abbey had control, the fortresses of Matterella, Precetto, Monterivoso , Umbrian and Gabbio.
In the picture Precetto and Monterivoso.
