The Synagogue of Rome, the largest in Europe, was built between 1901-1904 on one of the four plots of land that were recovered from the demolition of the Ghetto's most dilapidated sections. The Roman Jews expressed a desire to have their temple erected between the two greatest symbols of Rome's recently re-found liberty:
the Campidoglio - Rome's Town Hall, with its nearby monument to Victor Emanuel II, and the Janiculum Hill, scene of the Risorgimento's fiercest fighting, and thus the site of Garibaldi's monument. Furthermore, they wanted the Temple to be large enough to be visible from all the city's highest points.
Because this was to become one of the first synagogues designed as such, the architecture took precedence over any particular style. The result is a truly eccentric building inspired by Assyrian and Babylonian concepts.
For Roman Jews, the Synagogue is not merely a place of prayer but an essential cultural center with a museum exhibiting the history of Jewish life in Rome. It is also a reference point for all Jewish religious and political bodies. Although not all of Rome's 15,000 Jews live in the ghetto area, they still form a large and important Italian community. Even though they maintain their own identity, they contribute heavily to the city's cultural life.

La Sinagoga di Roma, il più grande tempio d'Europa, fu costruita tra il 1901 e il 1904 su uno dei quattro lotti di terreno ricavati demolendo le più fatiscenti aree del ghetto. Per volontà espressa dagli ebrei romani il nuovo Tempio doveva sorgere tra i due maggiori simboli della ritrovata libertà romana:
il Campidoglio, sede del Comune a fianco al quale è il monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, e il Gianicolo, luogo delle più aspre battaglie risorgimentali e dove si trova il monumento a Garibaldi. Altro presupposto era che il Tempio fosse grande e visibile da ogni punto panoramico della città.
La mancanza di antichi modelli ai quali fare riferimento fece sì che si privilegiasse l'architettura piuttosto che lo stile; il risultato fu un edificio eclettico, ispirato a forme assiro-babilonesi.
Per gli ebrei romani la Sinagoga rappresenta, oltre che un luogo di preghiera, un fondamentale punto di riferimento culturale ed ospita una mostra permanente della Comunità israelitica di Roma. Fanno capo alla Sinagoga tutti gli organismi religiosi ed amministrativi che regolano la vita della comunità ebraica di Roma.
I 15.000 ebrei romani, non tutti residenti al ghetto, danno vita alla più numerosa ed importante comunità italiana e, pur mantenendo la propria identità, sono modello di integrazione nel tessuto culturale della città.

La synagogue de Rome, le plus grand temple en Europe, fut construite entre 1901 e 1904 sur un des quatre lots de terrain obtenus en démolissant les zones les plus délabrées du ghetto. Selon la volonté exprimée par les juifs romains le nouveau Temple devait naître entre les deux plus importants symboles de la liberté romaine retrouvée :
le Capitole, siège de l'Hôtel de Ville à côté duquel se trouve le monument à Victor Emmanuel II, et le Janicule, lieu des plus dures batailles du Risorgimento et où se trouve le monument à Garibaldi. En outre le Temple devait être grand et visible de chaque endroit panoramique de la ville.
Etant donné l'absence de modèles antiques auxquels se référer on privilégia l'architecture plutôt que le style ; il en résultat un édifice éclectique, d'inspiration assyro babylonienne. Pour les juifs romains la Synagogue représente, outre un lieu de prière, un point de repère culturel et accueille une exposition permanente de la communauté israélite de Rome.
Tous les organismes religieux et administratifs qui règlent la vie de la communauté juive de Rome tournent autour de la synagogue. Les 15000 juifs romains, qui n'habitent pas tous le ghetto, animent la plus nombreuse et importante communauté italienne, et tout en maintenant la propre identité, sont un modèle d'intégration dans le tissu culturel de la ville.

Die Synagoge von Rom, der größte jüdische Tempel in Europa, wurde von 1901 bis 1904 auf einem der vier Grundstücke errichtet, die beim Abriss der verkommensten Bauten des Ghetttos gewonnen wurden. Nach erklärtem Willen der römischen Juden sollte der neue Tempel zwischen den beiden wichtigsten Symbolen der wiedergewonnenen römischen Freiheit stehen:
dem Kapitol, Sitz der Stadtverwaltung, neben dem sich das Denkmal für Viktor Emanuel II befindet, und dem Gianicolo, dem Ort harter Schlachten zur Zeit der Renaissance, wo heute das Denkmal Garibaldis steht. Ein anderes Ziel war, dass die Synagoge groß und von allen Aussichtspunkten der Stadt aus sichtbar sein sollte.
Das Fehlen antiker Vorbilder für die Konstruktion ist der Grund dafür, dass man die Architektur dem Stil vorzog; das Ergebnis war ein eklektisches Gebäude, das sich an assyrisch-babylonischen Formen orientiert. Für die römischen Juden ist die Synagoge nicht nur ein Ort des Gebets, sondern auch ein wichtiger kultureller Bezugspunkt und Raum, wo die jüdische Gemeinde eine stände Ausstellung unterhält.
Alle religiösen und weltlichen Behörden der jüdischen Gemeinde haben hier ihren Sitz. Die 15000 römischen Juden, die nicht alle im Ghetto wohnen, bilden die größte und wichtigste jüdische Gemeinde Italiens und sind, auch wenn sie ihre eigene Identität bewahrt haben, ein Beispiel für Integration in die Kultur der Stadt.
