Photographer’s Note

A fragment of the ceiling inside Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four main basilicas of Rome. The ceiling ornaments display the arms of the two Borgia popes, Calixtus III and Alexander VI. These were gilded in 1493 out of gold that was sent to Rome by the Spanish Queen Isabella in repayment of the loans from pope Innocent VIII to finance the voyage of Columbus to the New World.
