Photographer's Note
A Squirrel in Dublin
I found this large 3D artwork, depicting a red squirrel on the wall of the Workshop Gastro Pub near the junction of Tara Street and George’s Quay in the centre of Dublin. It is a work by Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo, aka Bordalo II and is part of his series “Trash Animals”, whose aim is to raise awareness around environmental issues. It was installed about a year ago and is made entirely from waste material.
For more information about this artwork, see this article in The Irish Times (April 20, 2017): Have You Seen It? The Story Behind The Giant Squirrel on Tara Street.
Another photo from an alternative viewpoint is found in the WS.
The foreground features a number of posters, including one for the Irish referendum about abortion rights, which was held on May 25. Each and every lamppost in the country had at least one referendum campaign post (and I am not exaggerating), when we were in Dublin, even though it was more than three weeks until the referendum.

Bonjour, cher ami Lars,

Hello Lars, Amazing artwork made from scraps. It is worth to see it first in a smaller version, to have an idea what is going on and then to look closer at the details in the big pictures. In the main one, the squirrel is better seen. Awesome picture. Great original work. Superb presentation.
Kind regards MAlgo

Ciao Lars

Hello Lars,
This is an absolutely fantastic piece of wall art. I thought it was just a remarkably clever painting before I noticed it actually goes outside the wall. It's a great idea in every sense and so skillfully made. I hope it will remain here much longer than six months. The WS provides a perfect complement by showing us more precisely how it has been created. The link also provides an interesting background. There are many reasons why I will add this to my favourites.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Lars,
This is astounding!
Give me this to graffiti any time!
I hate to see litter around streets so this makes people aware that litter is good, in the right place!
Thank you for showing this.
I had never heard of it or seen it and you have given us a very sharp photograph, revealing all its details.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Good afternoon lars,
Well my friend, this is one gigantic mural and has so many details depicted, masterfully painted.
And no-less a fun photo-action which you masterfully executed.
Scaled with the one guy head on the lower part, and the lamp-post, which has an elegant design - all wonderfully shown.
My best regards,
Ike

Bonjour Lars,

Hi Lars,
I like the 3D effect here of the sculpture mounted to the wall, & the superb color and sharpness. The man on the cellphone seems oblivious to everything around him. Amazing construction of materials ranging from traffic lights, bikes, helmets & guitar necks to automobile fenders. Tfs!

Hallo Lars,
Vele groeten, Paul

hello Lars,
impressive the 3D artwork, with the squirrel to be made from all these different and colourful items by the artist Artur Bordalo. The brilliant light enhance the clarity as the sharpness of the scene with the posters below to complete the scenery.

Dag Lars,
Prettigedag verder, bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Hi Lars,
It is fascinating how this artwork looks much more like a squirrel as a fingerprint than opened in full size. It is so full of imaginative small details. Planning and realization of this one must have taken for ages. Shadows around those thrash items give strong 3D appearance.

Hi Lars,
this is for me one more illustration of the fact that we travel not only in space but also in time. I have lived in Dublin for 3 years but the squirrel was not there yet and now it appears to become an important landmark of the town.
Quite a nice installation and you of course must have followed any art exhibitions in your trip :)
Great reportage, thanks for sharing, I must include it on my list of places to see when I visit my friends in Dublin someday.
Very well done,
M

Dag Lars
Goed gedaan.

Hi, Lars.
Impressive this great work of art made with recycled material, there are hundreds of components forming the same and the image of the squirrel can see it clearly, the WS photo is also magnificent.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly realized factors, in this beautiful image.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi Lars
wow, how on earth did I miss this one in Dublin??????
I think I like the WS photo even more, but i love both.
reading your note, perhaps I was too early and it wasn't there yet. This is awesome! From what I understand the abortion bill passed, correct? and by a large number too
excellent post, my favourite of the day!

Hello Lars,
This is great. The artist is very talented, and the piece is attractive and unique. I also like the posters in the foreground. It was interesting to examine the large version of this photo, and see all the trash that was used to create this very real-looking squirrel. I hope all is well with you, and I hope to see you and your father in August. :-)

Oi, Lars!
Eu realmente gostei dessa escultura 3D! É interessante a ideia do artista de usar resíduos. O resultado ficou excelente.

Hi Lars,
I love this mural for its originality and the way it makes one think about environment !
It definitely makes one think about the problem of trash and waste in our modern world.
An I wonder if the artists decided to depict a red squirrel, because this species is in danger all over Europe, because of the introduction of the grey squirrel from Canada via England !
Very good reportage and capture as usual.
Have a great Sunday.
Marie-Louise.

Hello Lars, what an amazing piece of artwork!
I missed this when you first posted it!
It is the eye of the squirrel that really brings the creature to life. I cannot begin to imagine how the artist set about the work.
Beautiful sharp shot.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
Regards Jean.

Lars, Ireland and Northern Ireland are famous for their murals. I ve seen many artworks on Belfast walls. This one represents a squirrel a common animal living in the country. I like the three dimensional effect. Good inclusion of advertisements. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.
