Photographer's Note

... and a short break from ruins. Today I want to share with you one of my 'interior' shots. Not that I do too many of them, but I do have few ones with I really treasure.

I took this photo in St. Peter's Church in Drogheda, co.Louth. Again, you can take a direct train from Connolly station (Dublin City Centre) to Drogheda.

The first Church on the site was built in 1791. It was designed by Francis Johnston. Present church which was opened in 1884 incorporates part of that 'old' buiding. The facade is an imposing structure in the Gothic style, built of local limestone.

I did some research to find some details about St.Oliver Plunkett, whose remains wre kept within the church. He was born at Loughcrew near Oldcastle, Co. Meath and trained for the priesthood abroad. He was then ordained in 1654 and become the Archbishop Of Armagh in 1669.
He is believed to have spent a lot of time in Drogheda and is credited with bringing the Jesuits to town and opening a number of schools. In line with the Penal Laws, Catholics were not allowed practice their religion openly at the time, but Plunkett managed to defy them for a period. Unfortunately later he had to go into hiding, travelling only in disguise.
He was eventually arrested in Dublin in 1679 and found guilty of high treason and then inprisonned in Newgate Prison for some time. On 11th July 1681 he was taken to Tyburn (now Marble Arch) and hanged, drawn and quartered. Quite tragic...

Plunkett was declared a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1973. His preserved head forms the centre piece of the shrine in St Peters Church.

The church itself is very photogenic inside, but on the outside it's the opposite. Although the church is build in a style which I would call typical for irish sacral architecture, but it is so closely surrounded by modern buildings that you just can't take a good picture of it.

And the last info in terms of this photo. I have't used my tripod, but simply placed my camera on the floor.

Cheers!
