Photographer's Note

This is a view of Castle Neuhaus not far away from Erlangen in Franconia/Bavaria.

I have shown many castles here in TrekEarth but this one was a true challenge with regard to the possibilities of taking pictures.
The castle and the nearby village of the same name are situated in the valley of Aisch river, called Aischgrund, with about 1.500 fish ponds (in words: thousand five hundred!) in dimensions up to small lakes. Castle Neuhaus, a moated castle, additionally is surrounded by several of these big ponds. In front of the castle there was a small park with huge leafy trees - and no vista to the building. Looking for a favourable point of view in the surroundings I always again walked between high reeds and impressive old oaks. Sometimes I could see a gable of the castle - sometimes the first floor. There was no one to ask for information about a good place for taking a photo. Well, at last I entered the forest of reeds, chased away some ducks, slipped several times, got muddy shoes and socks. Finally I saw the castle as you can see it here - still half hidden behind branches.
I think this was my most difficult photo so far ... ;-)

A castle first was built here in the 13th century by the counts of Andechs-Meranien. During the centuries it changed hands several times. In 1545 the barons of Crailsheim bought the castle and they fortified it - apart from the surrounding ponds - with three (!) moats. The today Renaissance castle was built from 1612 to 1618 and still today the castle is property of the barons of Crailsheim.

In the workshop you can see a photo of the inner courtyard of castle Neuhaus.

Using the map view function lefthand (please click at "satellite") you can see the situation of the castle and perhaps understand my difficulties.
